António Jerónimo, a master’s student at Instituto Superior Técnico and INESC ID, won third place in the 2024 edition of the REN Award (Prémio REN).
The award-winning thesis, “Modelling Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Flexibility for Long-Term Distribution Network Planning“ was developed under the EV4EU project and completed in November 2023 as part of a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. Supervised by Professors Pedro Carvalho and Célia Jesus (Técnico | INESC-ID), the thesis received a perfect score of 20/20 and, one year after its defense, has now earned REN €10,000 prize.

In his acknowledgments, António expressed his gratitude to his supervisors, as well as to Hugo Morais and EV4EU team members Diogo Ferreira and Cindy Lascano, for their support and contributions to his work.
Jerónimo’s research proposes an innovative electric vehicle (EV) charging flexibility model tailored for long-term network planning. The model evaluates charge point operators’ (CPOs) capacity to adjust the load at charging stations, aligning with distribution system operators’ (DSOs) target load during flexibility service (FS) requests.
The REN Award is attributed, each year, to the best master’s theses on energy developed in Portuguese universities, and aims to contribute to the development of the energy sector in Portugal and strengthen the interaction between REN and Academia in Portugal.
Both the first and second prizes were awarded to students from the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). The first prize went to Leonardo Fernandes for his thesis “Simulation of Flow Conditions for Natural Gas and Hydrogen Blends at Different Points of the Distribution Natural Gas Network.” The second prize was awarded to Luís Rodrigues for his work “A Techno-Economic Feasibility Analysis of a Hydrogen Power Plant in a Market Environment.”
