The EV4EU Coordination team at INESC ID and the SPS Group come together to honor the memory of our dear colleague Marcelino Ferreira, who passed away on June 5th, 2025.
Professor Ferreira was a respected researcher at INESC ID, a full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, and a valued contributor to the EV4EU project. His legacy reaches far beyond his academic and professional achievements.
His commitment, kindness, genuine care for others, good humor and mood, left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working with him. He will be deeply missed.
“I’ve had the honor of working with Professor Marcelino over the past five years. He played a key role in helping me integrate into Técnico when I joined as a new faculty member. His deep knowledge of power engineering is truly impressive, but what stood out to me even more was his unique and forward-thinking vision of the world. Professor Marcelino has supported the EV4EU project from the proposal stage, and I’m confident he takes pride in the success we are now achieving. “
Hugo Morais, senior researcher at INESC ID and EV4EU Project Coordinator
“Professor Marcelino’s death leaves an indescribable void. From the first moment we met, he greeted me with natural warmth and genuine kindness. I still smile when I remember how he would playfully joke about my Portuguese accent, gently pointing out, long before most people, that I could pass as a Brazilian even though I wasn’t. May God receive him lovingly, and may he rest in eternal peace. Though he has left our sight, the joy and encouragement he shared remain with us, an enduring reminder to welcome others as warmly as he welcomed me.”
Cindy P. Gúzman, Postdoctoral researcher at INESC ID
“I was an older student from Prof. Marcelino in Power Flow Analysis and Control and Optimization of Power Systems. He was always very kind and in a good mood, making others feel good and happy. With a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology he was a very simple, accessible, and knowledgeable person. He was a specialist on numerical calculation of multidimensional systems with Jacobian and Hermitian matrices. On his classes he made many analogies easily catching the interest from students. During the lessons on DC transmission, he told the history of the first DC grid built by Thomas Edison in New York City and of the DC transmission lines in the USA. He was the first one to tell me the history of Tesla’s Elephant. I remember the analogy of the active power flow depending on the phase angle difference with a carriage pulled by two side by side horses. His good mood, making others smile, will remain in our mind.”
António Costa, Postdoctoral researcher at INESC ID.
“Professor Marcelino always brought light to the department whenever he arrived, with his good humor and warm personality. He genuinely cared about people and always asked me about my girls—“Wonderful!”, the best there is”. I will remember him with great esteem.”
Ana Rita Nunes, Project manager at INESC ID
“I was privileged to have met Professor Luís Marcelino Ferreira during my master’s studies. His inspiring lectures on Power Systems Analysis, together with the supervision of my master thesis with Professor Pedro Carvalho have led me to pursue the doctoral degree in this area. I am deeply grateful for the support and friendship throughout this journey and for the many enriching and joyful conversations. Professor Marcelino had a great impact on my personal and academic paths, he was both a true friend and a mentor. Despite his passing, he will forever keep inspiring me.”
Diogo Pinto Ferreira, PhD student at Instituto Superior Técnico.
On behalf of the SS Group, our deepest condolences to Professor Ferreira’s family, friends, and all who had the honor of working alongside him.
