EV4EU hosts Workshop with EDA Users in the Azores

On June 18th, EV4EU Portuguese demonstrator partners gathered at EDA’s facilities on São Miguel Island, Azores, to host a workshop addressed to EDA users and present the Demonstrator installed at the company premises.

Led by Smart Energy Lab (SEL) alongside EDA, the one-day session brought together eleven EDA employees who were welcomed by representatives from the EV4EU project Consortium.

At the EDA demonstration site, the project is focused on testing Electric Vehicle Fleet Management solutions tailored for light passenger transport used by small and medium enterprises. Located near the facility’s new entrance, the demonstrator currently features five EV chargers: 2 standard sockets, 2 smart chargers, 1 charger with Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) capabilities.

Under the EDA Demonstrator, other six charging points are planned to be installed until the end of the project, able to accommodate a fleet of at least 32 electric vehicles, serving as a testbed for V2X smart control strategies designed to meet the operational needs of fleet managers.

At this Demo site, EV4EU is assessing three parallel scenarios using the project’s advanced control system, developed by INESC ID. This control architecture combines real-time monitoring, intelligent energy management, and advanced forecasting and optimization algorithms to support smart and efficient EV charging operations.

The main objectives are:

  • Coordinating EV charging with the output of the Graminhais wind farm during off-peak hours to avoid curtailment,
  • Performing voltage regulation to prevent congestion in the local distribution grid on São Miguel,
  • Demonstrating the feasibility of smart energy integration in real-world operational settings.

The demonstrator is currently accessible to all EDA Group employees for both personal and company vehicle charging. Charging sessions are managed via a user-friendly app developed by the project. EDA employees can start a session by scanning a QR code next to the charger or visiting a specific link, logging in, and providing basic information. In a near future, the system will also be made available to external visitors.

Regarding the V2X charger, it is still in the testing phase and not yet open for general use, but it is expected to become soon available to EDA employees as the technical validation progresses.

Overall, the Azores demonstrator aims to test V2X strategies that facilitate electric vehicle charging in homes, building and companies. Nine demo sites are being implemented and tested in the island: EDA Campus with charging stations, V2X and network services; Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC – Laboratório Regional de Engenharia Civil) with controllable load, and service network; and 7 other sites with field test in houses.
