Driving the Future:  EV4EU joins forces with the V2X Cluster at the RTR 2026

Since its launch in June 2022, the EV4EU Project has participated in more than 60 events across Europe, actively contributing to discussions on smart charging and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies. In February 2026, EV4EU returned to the European Conference on Results from Road Transport (RTR Conference 2026) in Brussels, for the second consecutive year.

Held from 10–12 February 2026, the event provided a privileged platform for collaboration, with EV4EU joining forces with three V2X Cluster fellow projects – FLOW, SCALE, and XL-Connect. As the saying goes, “unity is strength”, and a major milestone for EV4EU has been its participation in the V2X Cluster, a collaborative initiative that brings together Horizon Europe projects to accelerate the deployment of V2X technologies and promote smart, interoperable, and inclusive EV charging solutions across Europe.

At the event, the Cluster shared a booth in the exhibition area, offering attendees first-hand insights into cutting-edge developments in smart charging and V2X innovation. The V2X Cluster booth served as a networking hub, attracting industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and innovators. It was a meeting point for exchanging ideas and laying the groundwork for future collaborations, which is a crucial outcome of such European gatherings.

EV4EU was represented onsite by Project Coordinator Hugo Morais (INESC ID) and Matej Zajc (University of Ljubljana). Together, they participated in high-level discussions on how to better align Europe’s needs of electric vehicle users and efficient V2X management strategies.

On the final day of the conference, V2X Cluster members were part of the session “Smart and Flexible Charging of EVs.” The session was moderated by Project Officer Eric Cerneaz (CINEA) and Christof Schernus (FEV Europe), whose deep understanding of the projects enabled an insightful and forward-looking discussion.

In his presentation, Hugo Morais showcased EV4EU’s latest achievements, highlighting the project’s user-centric V2X management strategies that have been piloted across four diverse demonstration sites: Portugal, Slovenia, Denmark, and Greece.

The Session also featured presentations by Josh Eichman with “FLOW – Flexible Energy Systems Leveraging the Optimal Integration of EV Deployment Waves,” Baerte de Brey on “SCALE – Smart Charging Alignment for Europe,” and Alois Steiner with “XL-Connect – Large-Scale System Approaches for Advanced Charging Solutions.”

As presentations concluded, the discussion turned to the need for consistent regulatory frameworks and interoperable technology – the very pillars the V2X Cluster is helping to build.

Here’s a highlight of the  key topics under discussion:

  • User participation in flexibility services
  • Value of smart charging vs V2X
  • Impact of grid services in Battery degradation
  • Sharing of data and knowledge in V2X Cluster

The V2X Cluster’s participation at RTR 2026 is proof of the impact of European collaboration. By aligning technical innovation, regulatory dialogue, and user-focused design, the Cluster is helping Europe to shape how to manage its energy and mobility transition in the years to come.
