On November 20th, the V2G Leaders Summit hosted a dedicated V2X Cluster session, bringing together six of the eight Horizon projects that make up the Cluster and are working together at the forefront of bidirectional charging.
EV4EU was represented by project coordinator Hugo Morais, who joined fellow cluster members to present ongoing collaborative efforts and share real-world insights.
The Session titled “Real-world Implementation Challenges and Workarounds of Ongoing V2G Projects” featured: Baerte De Brey (SCALE), Gonçalo Mendes (DriVe2X), Josh Eichman (FLOW), Lisa Calearo (AHEAD) and Alois Steiner (XL-CONNECT).
Together, the speakers highlighted the V2X Cluster’s joint work on communication, dissemination, and technical collaboration, as well as the project-led working groups exploring key cross-cutting topics such as business models, interoperability, and battery degradation.
The session also provided a deeper look into the cluster’s mission and the individual contributions of its member projects. Following an introductory presentation, a roundtable discussion shared practical testimonials from EV4EU, SCALE, DriVe2X, FLOW, AHEAD, and XL-CONNECT.
The discussion explored real-world challenges in topics like: OEM compatibility, interoperability & standardization, use case replicability & harmonization, data quality, privacy & communications, cybersecurity, business cases & scalability, regulatory & market frameworks.

But the joint session did more than highlight challenges – it showcased success stories and a look on how to accelerate V2X deployment in Europe.
“During the session, we had an interesting discussion about the barriers to the deployment of V2X technologies, highlighting the need for a more effective application of standards and the use of the term ‘standard-compliant’ by technology providers and car OEMs. The use and application of standards is not harmonized, resulting in costly system integration and limiting interoperability. Another important effort that should be made is the harmonization of grid codes, creating better conditions for the deployment of AC V2X technology.”

More about the V2X Cluster
The V2X Cluster is a non-formal collaboration of Europe Horizon projects validating bidirectional charging solutions across 20+ countries. The cluster currently includes eight projects, representing over 80+ million euros in EU funding and working on dozens of real-world use cases are deployed in homes, buildings, and public areas.
At the V2G Leaders’ Summit, the Cluster also hosted a joint booth to showcase each project’s innovations and progress, including the EV4EU project.
